Knowledge of God

The Only Way

This is an evangelic website proclaiming Jesus Christ as the ONLY WAY to Heaven.

The knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

One evening, many years ago, when I sat down to do my daily Bible reading, I opened the Bible at 2 Peter 1 which was the reading for the day. As I read verse 2 "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord", I stopped for a moment to reflect on this wonderful piece of Scripture. As I meditated on the power of the verse there was one word that conrolled my thinking and that was the word "knowledge". Being a young Christian (not by age, but the time that I had been a "born-again" Christian) at the time I wanted so much to increase my knowledge of God and of Jesus my Lord and my Saviour. As I prayed I ask God "Father I want to increase my knowledge of Thee and of Your Son Jesus, can You please show me how I increase my knowledge?" As God only can do, the word "knowledge" in my head was replace by the word "Proverbs" and I knew then that it was in the book of Proverbs that I would find my answer. Sure enough, starting from the first chapter I didn't have to read too far when I struck "gold". In the first 5 verses I received my answer. Let me just break down these verses one by one.

Proverbs 2:1 - "My son, if you will receive my sayings, And treasure my commandments within you,

As He called me "His son" I felt overwelmed by a large wave of love and happiness. I knew that through me trusting in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour, I was adopted as a son into His family. Such a privilege, such a blessing, such an assurance of eternal belonging.

I have to receive (read and believe) His sayings (words, the Scriptures) and treasure (the Hebrew word is tsaphan which also means "store up, hide") His commandments within me. Just reading the Bible is not enough (but better than not reading the Bible), one must read and study the Word of God and store it up in the mind and heart.

Proverbs 2:2 "Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding"

At most training seminars I have attended the emphasis was always placed on the skill of "listening" to what clients want. The more we knew about them the better our service could be. Here of course we have to listen to what God tell us through His Word. The wisdom we have to be attentive to is of course the wisdom from above and not worldly wisdom. That's why I love the book of Proverbs. It is just full of wisdom, wisdom and more wisdom.

Understanding must come from the heart.

Proverbs2:3 "For if you cry for discernment. Lift your voice for understanding:

Matthew Henry puts this in a real nice way when he wrote: "We must cry after knowledge, as one that is ready to perish for hunger begs hard for bread. Faint desires will not prevail; we must be importunate, as those that know the worth of knowledge and our own want of it. We must cry, as new-born babes, after the sincere milk of the word." I like that, as we know that we must start with the milk and move from there to solid food. The more good milk we receive the stronger we become.

We must lift our voices in prayer to ask for understanding. We must lift our voice to God in Heaven from where wisdom and understanding comes.

Proverbs 2:4 "If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures;"

Many people put their silver above anything else. We must put our desire for the knowledge of God even higher, well and truly above anything else.

To find silver we have to dig (into the soil), work hard, endure hardships etc. So too with trying to find the knowledge of God we must as it were dig deep (into His Word) the Truth, we must work hard in our study not just a quick read and hope we receive understanding. We must give up some pleasure time and devote that time to some serious and prayerful study of God's Word.

Proverbs 2:5 "Then you will discern the fear of the Lord, And discover the KNOWLEDGE OF GOD.

Wow! Here we have it! It's only after we have "listened to what God has to say", "inclined our hearts to understanding" (heart knowledge is so much better than head knowledge), "asked (cried out) for discernment and understanding", "dug through the Scriptures and searched the Word of God for treasured facts about God", that we will discern the fear of the Lord (stand in awe of Him and know how to worship Him) and discover the THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD.
